Writing Better Essays is a self-paced essay-writing course that consists of eight tasks, a total of fifteen essays. WBE is available for Gamsat AU and IE candidates from October to mid-March and for Gamsat UK candidates from mid-April to mid-September. After paying for the course, you can use e-mail or the postal service to send in your essays. The first essay topic is included in our informative mailout.

Writing Better Essays teaches the specific skills required for success in the GAMSAT essay section. It will also help to hone skills that will permanently improve your ability to write well. We do not teach you to write mediocre essays based on a formula. Instead, Writing Better Essays will help you develop your own writing style.

Submitted essays are marked and then the candidate is provided with detailed feedback that is both constructive and positive. As the essay topics increase in difficulty, the feedback changes in response to the increase in candidate ability. Candidates are given constructive advice on how to improve their individual styles. Lessons in essay writing are an integral part of this course. In addition, essays on the same topics by peers from previous years are included when your essay is returned. The markers’ commentaries on these peer essays reinforce aspects of essay organisation and style.

The first task of Writing Better Essays is a single reflective/discursive essay on a personal topic. By the second task, you will have graduated to writing two essays per task as we introduce to you the expository/argumentative essay. Indeed, each of tasks two to eight is equivalent to a full Section 2 (of GAMSAT) requiring the candidate to write two essays in one hour.

Two essays

Your marked essays;
about three pages of constructive criticism and advice;
a further lesson on essay writing;
peer essays and markers’ comments on them;
prompts for the next essay task.

If you work at the usual rate of one task per week, Writing Better Essays takes about two months to complete all eight tasks.

As in the GAMSAT, our essay topics change from year to year. Because our markers make individual comments on your essays, they cannot stand marking the same topics year after year. After some 600 essays on ‘Happiness’, the markers have had enough of happiness to last several years.
